Bridge in Kaunas

Kaunas - Lithuania

The Panemune bridge was constructed in place of its ageing predecessor which was finally dismantled in 2012. The work on the new bridge construction began in November 2012, with MC having been selected right from the start by the planning engineers UAB Kelprojektas for supply of the anti-graffiti protection system. The long-standing and successful relationship with the general contractor UAB Kauno Tiltai, a customer of MC, was instrumental in ensuring that further systems of MC were requested and utilised throughout all the phases of the bridge-building project. One tangible advantage for the contractor was the close vicinity of MC’s storage depot, located just five kilometres from the construction site. This meant that the products did not need to be stored locally, instead being fetched from the depot as and when required.
Extensive know-how input
Aside from the anti-graffiti protection system and a concrete repair system, MC also provided a coating system for the bridge copings which, unlike any other exposed component, are particularly susceptible to moisture and de-icing salts. Such surface protection systems from MC serve to increase resistance to aggressive chemical and environmental attack, thus extending the service life not just of copings and parapets, but also the entire bridge fabric.
In the case of the Kaunas project, additional requirements specified by the client relating to the functionality of the bridge copings necessitated the development of a special solution which the MC team elaborated together with the planning engineers and the selected applicator firm. The MC system consisted of a moisture-tolerant bond coat, a oil- and petroleum-resistant epoxy resin coating and the high-resistance, low-yellowing topcoat MC-DUR 1252, all applied to a specified layer thickness of 5 mm.

Due to cold temperatures, the work performed on the copings of the Panemune bridge represented quite a challenge – but one that was readily overcome.

The biggest challenge was the work carried out on the bridge copings which had to be implemented shortly after completion of the deck asphalting work in October 2015. The works were heavily reliant on good weather. Although it was sunny, it was rather cold for October. That meant that the applicators had to wait each day until the temperature was high enough to apply the resin coat to the 1,400 m² of surface area. In the end, however, everything was carried out to the full satisfaction of the client, allowing the Panemune bridge to be inaugurated at the end of 2015 and thereafter assume its function as a vital link between the two halves of the city of Kaunas.
